Which Class Do I Need?
When choosing between a Class 1 or Class 2 gas fire for a fireplace, the type of flue or chimney system in the property is an important factor to consider.
In nearly all cases if you have an inset fireplace you will have either a deep Class 1 chimney or a shallower Class 2 chimney with a cast cement back.
Deep fuel beds, also known as Class 1 chimney gas fires, are intended for use with brick built chimneys or prefabricated flues, which are commonly found in pre-1960 homes. These types of gas fires have full depth fuel beds and are suitable for use with Class 1 chimneys.
On the other hand, slimline fuel beds, also known as Class 2 chimney gas fires, are found on slimline fires, which are designed for flat walls or multi-flue chimneys. Slimline fuel beds are usually at least 10cm/4 inches shallower than the full depth fuel beds found in Class 1 chimney gas fires. Slimline fuel beds are suitable for most chimney/flue types, but it’s important to always check with a qualified installer to ensure that your chimney is suitable for your chosen gas fire.
